Kakita

Kakita River has the highest volume of spring water in Asia.

Famous Waters of Mount Fuji

From very ancient times, people have benefited from the pure and abundant waters around Mount Fuji; using these waters for both daily life and for agriculture. In more modern times, this abundant groundwater has contributed to the development of many local industries and there are many factories, such as paper, chemical, and electronic factories, located near the mountain. Since the mountain’s abundant groundwater with its constant temperature is not overly laden with minerals, it is highly suitable for human consumption. It is also very suitable for fish farming, such as for trout, and there are many trout farms located on the western of the foot of the mountain.

Shiraito

Shiraito Falls

Mount Fuji annually receives approximately 2.5 billion tons of rain and snow and scientists estimate that as much as 1 million tons of that precipitation seeps into the ground per day. Absorbed into the ground, it slowly bubbles up as spring and well water between gaps in the rock layers at the foot of the mountain. This water is both plentiful and famous throughout Japan for its purity and taste. Some of the more famous water sources are Fujinomiya City’s Wakutama spring water, water from the Shiraito Falls (which has been named by Japan’s Environmental Agency (now Ministry of the Environment) as one of the cleanest water sources in Japan) and Mishima City’s Kohama Pond and Kakitagawa River. Of particular note are the waters of the Kakita River. Gushing from a dozen small and large size gaps in the ground, up to 1 million tons of spring water gushes from the ground every day, making it the largest source of spring water in all of Japan.
