Pharma Valley

State-of-the-Art Drug Research at Pharma Valley

Pharma Valley, in eastern Shizuoka, is a unique collaborative network of medical research, drug development and patient treatment centers that brings together businesses, government and academia. The network includes leading research institutes and universities, over two dozen hospitals and pharmaceuticals companies working to develop new diagnostic and treatment methods, medical devices and wellness therapies. The synergies created by these collaborations have greatly enhanced both the quality and results obtained from the research projects. This work was further supported with the 2002 establishment of the Shizuoka Cancer Center, now a magnet for many projects.

Shizuoka Cancer Center and Cancer Research Center

A World-Class Center of Cancer Excellence

The Shizuoka Cancer Center was set up in 2002, followed in 2005 by the Shizuoka Cancer Center Research Institute. These facilities provide some of the best cancer care in Japan and are at the leading edge of research. The cancer center works closely with Pharma Valley Center, and emphasis is placed on information-sharing between researchers, clinicians, and corporations. Researchers from some of Japan’s leading universities work at the center, which encourages collaboration with private-sector companies. The center functions both as an R&D facility and a full-scale patient facility that provides everything from treatment to palliative care.

Hot Springs Healing

Fostering "Personal Treatment Spas"

As part of the Pharma Valley Center, Shizuoka is promoting regional wellness industries such as those related to its plentiful hot springs. As of 2005, the prefecture had designated 39 establishments as “kakaritsuke-yu” (personal treatment spas). The classification makes it easy for users to check the medicinal and other properties of each spa. Visits combine the pleasure of a trip along with the healing benefits of that particular hot spring. The facilities are designed to provide optimum comfort and safety in a wide variety of spectacular natural settings. Visitors can also choose their destination according to the particular properties of the waters there, and each establishment posts both indications and contraindications for its waters.
