Atami City
|
|
Located
at the farthest east of Shizuoka Prefecture and northeastern
part of Izu Peninsula, and affected by Fuji Volcanic Range, Atami is a
central city of Izu-Hakone hot spring resorts. There are 6 spa areas in
the city, including Izu-Yugawara, Izusan, Atami, Izu-Taga, Ajiro and
Hatsushima Island.
Literally, Atami means hot sea, and in ancient times, hot water was
said to be boiling out of the sea. During the Edo period, the 1st
shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu loved Atami spa so much that he had the hot
water carried to Kyoto and Tokyo. Since Meiji period, foreign
diplomats, top government officials and powerful business people, as
well as novelists and scholars came to the spa. Some of them had
beautiful villas built, and the remaining cottages are now valued
cultural heritages of the city.

Atami's accessibility was improved dramatically, thus changing the city’s history of development,
after completion of the Tanna Tunnel on the Tokaido Railway in 1934. It became a full city by merging Atami
Town and Taga Village in 1937. During mid Showa era, it was the most popular honeymoon destination.
It has been developing as an International Tourism City with Hot Springs and Culture (designated by law in 1950).

Easy access from Tokyo metropolitan area makes Atami an optimum location for a weekend hideaway
from busy life. Atami is blessed with beautiful beaches, mountains, an island and hot springs of
the top quality and quantity. Thus the city can offer a lot to visitors, including fresh sea food,
marine sports, golf, flowers and cultural spots. It aims at prospering further as a “long-stay resort”
meeting needs of the age and “global resort” entertaining guests from all over the world.
