Kakegawa is a city blessed by nature, where people can enjoy outdoor sports year-round,
to the north surrounded by Hakkou Mountain and Obi Mountain, the southernmost of the Southern Alps,
and to the south Enshu Sea. Making the most of the charms of nature in Kakegawa, many beautiful
resort facilities have been put up. The magnificent nature lends wings to diverse excursion
and a lot of learning. Today, the whole city of Kakegawa is a magnificent resort.

History

Kakegawa has a history of castles and Tiokaido Road. During civil war period, Kakegawa Castle,
Takatenjin Castle and Yokosuka Castle were built as strategically crucial bases, and many of
warring lords fought battles over them. Kakegawa and Nissaka thrived as post stations along
Tokaido Road connecting Edo and Kyoto. Kakegawa was also a post station along "Road of Salt",
an important road conveying salt between Sagara and Shinshu. The castle town, Kakegawa, has a
long history over 500 years.

Thanks to rich nature, various local specialties are cultivated, such as tea leaf and kudzu.
There are many local products in Kakegawa, such as tea leaves, strawberry, rose, gross cloth,
local confection and so on. Main arteries of Japan's traffic, Shinkansen (bullet train), Tomei
Express Highway and Route 1 are all in place. Kakegawa continues to grow as one of the best
industrial cities in Shizuoka with over 1-trillion-yen product shipment value.
