Shizuoka University of Art and Culture
Shizuoka University of Art and Culture is a publicly-funded, privately-run university that opened in April 2000 in the city of Hamamatsu. Universal design is one of the educational principles of its Faculty of Design.
Universal Design Elements
- Universal design has been set forth as one of the university’s educational principles.
- Buildings have been designed to minimize barriers and ramps.
- Elevators have recorded guidance messages and large mirrors.
- Signs have easy-to-read white lettering on blue backgrounds (the school color).
- Variable-height counter desks have been provided.
- Doors have lever handles and ample openings.
- Main passageways have ridged guide paths for the visually impaired.
- Lecture theaters have seating areas for wheelchair users.
- Floor numbers are shown in braille on stair handrails. (A single dot indicates the 1st floor, two dots indicate the 2nd floor, etc.)
- Multifunctional restrooms have been provided.
